Unveiling the next era of AI innovation with Microsoft Bing and Edge

Three months ago, Microsoft introduced the world to the new AI-powered Microsoft Bing and Edge, aiming to redefine the future of search as your ultimate web companion. The goal was to address a universal issue with traditional search engines: nearly half of all web searches go unanswered, leaving billions of people without satisfactory results. With the new Bing, we set out to deliver improved search outcomes, answers to your questions, seamless conversation capabilities, and effortless natural language interaction. By combining robust large language models like OpenAI's GPT-4 with our extensive search index, Bing offers current, cited, and conversational results that are unparalleled. This transformative approach is revolutionizing how people access information.

In just 90 days, users have embraced the new Bing, engaging in over half a billion chats. They have utilized the chat features to obtain concise answers, whether it's finding the perfect pollen-free travel destination or compiling a comprehensive table of global volcanic activity over the past decade. Additionally, users have created over 200 million images using Bing Image Creator. As a result, Bing has exceeded 100 million daily active users, and daily installs of the Bing mobile app have quadrupled since its launch. We are thrilled to witness this growth in Bing's market share, further complementing the continuous expansion of our Microsoft Edge browser over eight consecutive quarters. Furthermore, we are excited to introduce Bing to the Windows taskbar, reaching over half a billion customers each month.

Entering the Next Generation of AI-Powered Search

Today, Microsoft announced the next generation of AI-powered Bing and Edge, propelling the largest category of software – search – into a new era of possibilities. This next generation introduces the following key advancements:

Open Preview: Microsoft has moved Bing from Limited Preview to Open Preview, eliminating the waitlist for trials. This means that everyone can now effortlessly experience the new Bing and Edge by simply signing into Bing with their Microsoft Account.

Visual Search: Understanding that the human brain processes visual information significantly faster than text and enhancing the visual aspect of search. Rich image and video answers are now an integral part of Bing, allowing users to find information more easily. We have expanded Bing Image Creator to support all languages, empowering users to create visual content in their native languages.

Productivity Enhancements: Users can now enjoy multi-session productivity experiences with chat history and persistent chats within Edge. The ability to maintain chat history and share/export conversations has been one of the most requested features, enabling seamless continuity and collaboration.

Platform Capabilities: Microsoft is opening up Bing as a platform, inviting developers and third parties to build on top of Bing and enhance user experiences. With third-party plug-ins, users can access additional services such as booking restaurant reservations or leveraging advanced data-driven insights, transforming search into a more holistic and action-driven process.

Continued Responsible AI Development

As Microsoft continues to embark on this journey of innovation, responsible AI remains at the core of their approach. By releasing the new Bing into preview, we have been able to gather real-world feedback and make necessary improvements. In collaboration with our partners at OpenAI, safeguards have been implemented to combat harmful content, misinformation, disinformation, and discriminatory content. Microsoft’s commitment to responsible AI aligns with good principles, ensuring a safe and enriching search experience for all users.
