"Our government is making access to the 5G spectrum easier to ensure that Canadians, particularly those in rural and remote parts of our country, can benefit from these emerging technologies," Minister Champagne said.
The Honourable Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development, also emphasized the government's commitment to fostering innovation and prosperity in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities. Minister Hutchings remarked, "Better access to 5G wireless technologies, local bandwidth, and high-speed connectivity will allow all Canadians, no matter where they live, to participate in the digital economy and take advantage of cutting-edge technologies."
To help with the implementation of this licensing framework, Innovation, Science, and Economic Development Canada is working on a simple, automated licensing system for users, which is expected to be available in 2024. Users will be able to get spectrum coverage for specified places, such as individual farms, factories, university campuses, or shopping centers, thanks to non-competitive local licensing. This regional strategy will open the way for a slew of future advances. Farms, for example, might use the spectrum for private networks to automate processes such as crop tracking and product traceability, which demand significant bandwidth and network speed.
